Why Did the World Trade Center Collapse ?
نویسنده
چکیده
Each tower of the World Trade Center was designed to withstand, as a whole, the horizontal impact of a large commercial aircraft. Why, then, did total collapse occur? Zden ek P. Ba zant, Walter P. Murphy Professor of Civil Engineering and Materials Science at Northwestern University, and Yong Zhou, a graduate research assistant at Northwestern, suggest that the collapse was the dynamic consequence of the prolonged heating of the steel columns to very high temperatures. Such heating would have caused creep buckling of the columns of the framed tube along the perimeter of the structure that transmitted the vertical load to the ground. They offer the following as a likely scenario of the failure.

Why Did the World Trade Center Collapse?—Simple Analysis
This paper presents a simplified approximate analysis of the overall collapse of the towers of World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. The analysis shows that if prolonged heating caused the majority of columns of a single floor to lose their load carrying capacity, the whole tower was doomed. RATIONALE On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center collapse created an enormous urban disaster site with high levels of airborne pollutants. First responders, rescue and recovery workers, and residents have since reported respiratory symptoms and developed pulmonary function abnormalities. OBJECTIVES To quantify respiratory health effects of World Trade Center exposure in the New York Ci...
متن کاملThe World Trade Center Attack: Doctors in the fire and police services
The World Trade Center attack cast some physicians in roles outside their usual hospital practice. The incident required several physicians to function in the dangerous environment of the disaster. Priorities and triage strategies established by the police, emergency medical service and fire departments, while adhered to, required instantaneous modification and upgrading given the vast loss of ...
متن کاملGranulomatous pneumonitis following exposure to the World Trade Center collapse.
We describe a 37-year-old male engineer who presented with cough and dyspnea 3 weeks after exposure to dust resulting from the collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC). Radiographs of the chest and high-resolution CT demonstrated diffuse miliary nodularity. Lung biopsy specimens confirmed the presence of diffuse, noncaseating granulomatous nodules. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-disper...

n 11 September 2001, the Center for RobotAssisted Search and Rescue (CRASAR) responded within six hours to the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster; this is the first known use of robots for urban search and rescue (USAR). The University of South Florida (USF) was one of the four robot teams, and the only academic institution represented. The USF team participated onsite in the search efforts from...
